Our Collections

Our extensive collections have been built up over 200 years, The library currently holds approximately 40,000 books and adds 700 – 800 newly published works of fiction and non - fiction each year. Books are added on a monthly basis and members’ suggestions are welcome and considered for purchase.

The Library book collection has a good selection of materials of interest to local historians, many topographical works, and a wide selection of 19th and early 20th century novels. We are strong in literature, history and biography, travel, art and religion but our collections cover a wide range of subject areas. Our full catalogue is now available online so you can get now a taste of the collections before you visit the library.

Daily newspapers and a selection of current journals and magazines are available. These are not retained by the library but members can make annual sealed bids for their purchase.

There is a collection of audio books on tape and CD and a small number of music (mainly classical) CDs.

Our collections provide a fascinating glimpse of the changing reading habits of the citizens of a provincial Midlands city over the past 200 hundred years.
